Frequently Asked Questions
How to arrange for a Condition / Pre-Purchase survey
Confirm by email exactly what type of survey you want as well as the place and date of this survey and provide details of the vessel (builder’s name, type, length, age, professional or private).
Instructions to carry out the survey should be given at least one week-10 days prior to the attendance (please contact us for urgent cases). This will give time to schedule our surveyors and possibly arrange an appointment with the engineers/specialists required during survey (generally for large vessels). All information should be provided in sufficient time to enable the required services to be performed.
You will get an answer from us saying if we can do the survey and at what cost.
Arrange with the Owner/representative for our surveyor to board the vessel. Ensure that all appropriate safety measures are taken to provide safe and secure working conditions.
Arrange for one person knowing the vessel to be present on board during survey.
Give instructions to the Owner/representative to open all areas on the vessel that can be inspected and remove all obstructing items to facilitate the inspection. Please note that no dismantling is carried out during survey. Access, as far as possible, to the structure, bilges, pumps, tanks, machinery, sails (for sailing yachts) is required.
Arrange for the vessel to have electricity on board. All batteries should be fully charged and all equipment fully operational.
Ask to have all vessel’s documents ready to be sighted. Collect the maintenance history (invoices, reports etc.) and forward it to us.
Inform us if a memorandum of agreement (MOA) as been signed prior to the survey.
Arrange for surveyor fees to be paid few days prior to the survey. Sometimes funds take days to be received.
Our report together with our opinion on the vessel’s condition usually takes 3 to 4 working days to be issued, provided that we have all the required information (maintenance history etc.).
What type of survey should I look for?
We offer a range of surveys from Superficial to Pre-Purchase.
1) If all you need is a basic survey covering the general condition of the vessel and its principal parts, then a Superficial Survey would likely be sufficient. It is an economical way to check the vessel’s condition prior to a possible purchase
2) If , for example, you want to renew your insurance contract or have a survey carried out with the vessel “as is”, then our Condition Survey may be appropriate. It covers more than a Superficial Survey and includes a detailed inspection and check of the vessel systems. It is held either with the vessel afloat or with the vessel ashore and a detailed report is issued following the survey
3) Our Full Condition Survey/Pre-Purchase Survey covers every part and system of the vessel that can be inspected and tested. It is carried out with the vessel afloat and ashore.
Sea trials are held to confirm that the engines are in good operational condition. A detailed report is issued providing all the information needed to purchase the boat
We also offer other surveys such as:
4) Damage survey
When a boat has suffered a damage, an experienced surveyor is required to determine the extent of damage and the nature of repairs. Our long experience in this field together with our trusted contractors in the region is a key factor to facilitate the procedure at all levels.
5) Valuation survey
If you want to insure a vessel, take a loan from a bank to buy a vessel or sell your boat, then you need a Condition and Valuation survey. It is a Condition Survey with the addition of the vessel’s market value. A number of factors are taken into account , including the type of vessel, its age, condition, builder’s name and the current market. The valuation gives a fair market value at the time of survey.
How much does a survey take to do?
Normally between 3-8 hours (1 day max) for vessels up to 60 feet. The time depends mainly on the size, age and condition of the vessel. If the inspection is carried out abroad (Italy, Turkey, France, Croatia), it will take 2-3 days including flights, stay and survey. It takes more for larger vessels.
Sometimes the survey takes more than 1 day for small vessels in Greece because of problems or delays not due to us. The extra day(s) will be charged separately
.
How much will a survey cost?
Our fees are based on the vessel’s length, type, age, scope of the inspection and location.
We offer a range of survey options from Superficial to Pre-Purchase surveys.
For example the cost of Condition and Pre-Purchase surveys in the region of Athens varies between € 800 to € 1250 for vessels from 40 feet up to 60 feet. The survey is done in maximum 1 day. Any other attendance following completion of the inspection will be charged separetly. Transportation costs are only charged when attending outside Athens. Air tickets, ferries, hotels, taxis and maintenance costs are payable in advance and before booking the tickets (a quotation including the total cost of the expenses is sent to you).
The cost of Damage surveys and Valuation surveys are charged per hour.
The cost to confirm that all recommendations included in an inspection report have been delt with is charged per hour.
The estimation of the cost of repair works on a vessel is charged per hour.
Any extra attendance due to delays (postponed sea trials, problems faced etc.) are charged as a whole day.
Transportation expenses are charged at cost.
When will I get the report?
It usually takes 3-4 working days after the survey to write a detailed report and give our opinion on the vessel’s condition (provided that all information required has been received) unless agreed differently.
When should a survey be paid?
Surveyor Fees should be paid the latest few days prior to the survey. Payment can be made via bank transfer or credit card. It is to be noted that bank transfers sometime take days to be made when money is sent from outside the EU. Please be advised that we cannot proceed if payment has not been received.
